all wrapped up & happy {howie's birthday}

This is Howie on our cross country trip out west 9 years ago.  In this particular photo, we were visiting a friend at White Tail Ranch in Montana and helping with some work for WTR Outfitters.  After bailing hay all day and loading up the pack mules, we rode our horses into the Bob Marshall Wilderness.  Along craggy cliff trails we rode a 1/2 day in, winding our way through the quiet wilderness to drop off the supplies at camp.  And then...rode 1/2 a day back home.  It was the best day and full of more adventures than I could have hoped!!

Today is another best day...Howie B's Birthday!!  I met him 10 years ago, almost to the day.  He was my favorite then and still is now.  I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell all you girls this, but...I got the best one :)  I'll see him a little later for some birthday celebrating and present unveiling.  If you don't know this about me already...I love wrapping packages.  It might be one of my favorite things:)  Soft matte paper in naturals.  Raffia rolls in earth tones.  Twine.  Gift Tags.  Cinnamon Sticks.  I can't get enough of those goodies!

I won't tell you what's in these yet...just in case he's able to read this before this afternoon.

My Etsy orders are just as much fun to send, too :)
Well, Happy Birthday to Howie.  My best friend and my Love.  Keira got some new shoes for his birthday which she chose to wear over her jammies this morning.  It's customary in our house to share the Love on birthdays, so usually everyone else gets one present too :)  And also, the birthday celebrator wakes up to a present next to their pillow, just waiting to be unwrapped.  That's especially exciting when you're a kid!  Any birthday traditions in your house?

Can you believe they make Converse Chucks this tiny?!

And a Happy Wednesday to all the rest of us who aren't celebrating birthdays today!!

  1. Tell Happy birthday to Howie from us. :)

    We celebrate Birthday Week. Which means we get the other person to do special things for the birthdayee, like make blueberry pancakes, or walk their dog, or take them out to lunch, or make them a cup of tea...because, well, "it's almost my birthday..." it's not much different than normal, really, but we each like to make it count. :) Our birthdays are less than 5 weeks apart. We usually make a great dinner at home too.

  2. oh yeah, i forgot your birthdays were so close. that's kind of fun, actually. blueberry pancakes...yum. well it's nice that you guys make an event out of it because otherwise it really does feel like...just another day. i like how you "walk their dog" as if it isn't your dog too :) but i know what you mean because each dog has claimed one of you.

    oh yeah, and we also give the birthday"ee" a present in bed so as soon as they wake up in the morning...one is there, ready and waiting to be opened. that's just about the most exciting thing when your a kid (and pretty fun as an adult too).

  3. I have surprise parties for Alex, because he can't think of planning them for himself, but he loves being with the people he loves on his birthday. He never suspects- I sneak off in the mornings before work to go over and cook at a friend's, come home an hour later at night than when I said I'd be home, and he ends up getting bewildered and confused. But still never suspects.
    Last year he took me to Cape Cod and we did a long bike trip, in the rain, to Provincetown. Ate lobsters (my first time ever), spent the night, and rode back the following day.

  4. I'll tell him you said Happy Birthday, all.

    Somer...it's funny that the parties are still a surprise. you might think he would expect it after 3 or 4 years in a row :) your cape cod trip sounds perfect!! how did you enjoy the lobster? i'm curious because everyone raves about it wonders all the time. but, i've never had it myself.

  9. Happy Birthday to Howie, even though it's a bit late the sentiment is the same. Hope you guys had a fab day, your birthday traditions sound awesome! Waking up with a present right beside you is such a sweet thing, however does your little one get to sleep the night before her birthday hehe.

  10. Eadaoin- it's never too late for Happy Birthday's! The thing about the presents in your bed when you're a kid is...you always want to fall right to sleep because the sooner you do, the sooner your birthday and fun will appear :) It's kind of a secret mission, having to quietly sneak in and not crinkle the wrapping paper while the person is asleep.
